Description

"Under the sea is where it's at!!"

When I think of mermaids, I think they ought to not look like a person wearing a fish tail and have a perfect line between their human and fish parts. From an evolutionary standpoint, I think it makes more sense for them to have parts that make them suited towards living in water. So they have webbed fingers, scales along the body, and fins for cutting through water. And coloration that would make them a bit camouflaged in water. I dunno. This is how my scientific mind works. :P

This was second to the top most requested deviation to have re-done:
Cuttlefish by LucentAtelier
So here it is. I know I've not been drawing anything new as of late in favor of re-doing a lot of older works. But I'm in a semi art block and I also feel the need to clean up the horrible works I've done in the past. x____x;; Looking back, it's hard to understand why my past self thought any of these things were any good.

This time around, I took references of actual coral reefs, fish and how water gradients from the bottom up. I still kept the original color scheme for the hair because I like the idea of aqua colored hair~ And just because of my childhood idea that mermaids (at least the female ones) would decorate their hair, starfish, pearls, and sea flowers. I think I need to work at how hair floats in water, but relatively happy with the motion in this pic.

Wonder how long it is until I start to dislike this one...?
